Song Representation

A song that I think represents a theme in the play is the song "In the Wordless Chamber" by the band Emperor. The theme that it has in common is desperation and wanting. In the play Romeo and Juliet are desperate to be with each other which ultimately leads to their untimely deaths. The lyrics that describe this are" in the wordless chamber they feared death desperately." Also the song describes something similar to what Romeo was thinking when he drank the poison so that he would be with Juliet. This is described in the lyrics "in the wordless chamber they feared life desperately thus they proclaimed any given truth and swallowed as if to justify their fear." This is similer to what Romeo was going through because once he saw that Juliet was "dead," he desperately wanted to be with her so he drank the deadly poison. Also the lyrics "in the wordless chamber he accepted desperation and the unpredictable manifestations of hope" describes Romeo's actions becuase he is so desperate that he kills himself with the hope that he will be with Juliet in the next life. Also Juliet is related to the theme of desperation because she is so desperate to be with Romeo that she decides to fake her deat so that she could run off with Romeo and never see her family again. This shows that one of the main themes during the end of the play is the theme of desperation.

Emperor
In the Wordless Chamber

in the wordless chamber
they feared death
desperately
thus they clustered to the fruits of the earth
craving dispersion
as if to avoid knowing why

in the wordless chamber
they feared life
desperately
thus they proclaimed any given truth
and swallowed
as if to justify their fear

he knew that there had been hordes of seers
before him
who set out to cure
though, the sick wished not to part with
their decease
as if it made them feel
alive

in the wordless chamber
he accepted desperation
and the unpredictable manifestations
of hope
